Machine Knitting: Handmade knitwear
Machine knitting is a hands-on process of developing fabric for further use with the knitting machine as an extension of the hand for speed, intricacies, and versatility. In the examples below, the fabric created was developed as exact pattern pieces and further assembled into wearable garments using darning needles.
Using a more intricate process of planning, this tunic was originally drafted in jersey knit fabric. The pieces were then calculated to the exact number of stitches required for construction. This process is amazing for waste reduction as it is additive rather than subtractive.
Using a series of techniques to create triangular patterns and stripes directly on the knitting machine, this skirt was constructed with only one seam. Even the seam was completed on the machine, without a darning needle.
This photo of Zion was the inspiration behind the extra long stripe scarf. Using Adobe Illustrator, the most prominent color palette was selected, then the corresponding color in yarn, and ultimately mimicking the gradient pattern of colors in the sunset. The process of knit weaving was used to create dark green accents to act as trees.
